SLIRE: Scientific Literature Referencing
Internet Tool
SLIRE is destined to reference scientific papers according
to hierarchical thesaurus (es)
SLIRE is intended for networked researchers, around a common theme. For a given network of researchers, their common research theme can be broken down into simpler components. This breakdown leads to a hierarchical thesaurus towards which scientific literature of common interest to the network researchers can be referenced.
Slire is a common tool for networked researchers, in referencing documents necessary to literature review. It can be used by any number of networks of researchers, following thesauruses developed by them.
Slire is innovative because of the decentralized approach to referencing scientific papers, mainly by the authors of these documents: it differs from the standard centralized procedure by librarians.
The consultation, selection and export of referenced documents do not require registration which is only needed if you want to participate in feeding the database of document references. Slire rarely gives direct access to documents, because of the issue of property rights. For most documents, email addresses and URLs are indicated to facilitate the acquisition of documents.
Any coordinator of existing network of researchers can apply to use Slire by creating a specific thesaurus. He/She just needs to register him/herself, which allows him/her to login and enter the tab of settings to create a new thesaurus. This creation must be validated by the general administrator of Slire before the new thesaurus can be used. The downloadable users' manual gives all the information needed to create thesaurus or to use Slire.
Slire is a flexible tool. The thesaurus content can be adjusted during use. Each administrator of thesaurus can amend it by taking into account suggestions from its users.

The current version is improved during the implementation of a new project funded by the ACP secretariat of the European Union. This project, AFOMDnet or Analysis Network for Factors in Foodcrop supply, Marketing, and Diversification, is implemented in five African countries and is meant to be extended to other ACP countries. A specific thesaurus (AFOMDnet) was developed after the one related to issues related to Cottons and Societies (Colire). Other thesauruses are expected as we hope that more research networks will use Slire. This latter is associated to another innovative capitalizing tool CAN.
