- Abstract

- English abstract
- The effect of bloody castration and non-bloody castration on growth performances of Djallonke goats was carried out during twelve weeks. The aim of this study is to identify the castration mode liable to improve the growth performances of male dwarf goat in Benin. Sixty six goats of 4 to 6 months old and of which live weight was on average 5.83 ± 0.15 kg were divided in three lots. The lot 1 (control lot) was constituted of entire male goats, the lot 2 of animals that undergo bloody castration with bistoury and the lot 3 of animals that undergo non bloody castration with the Burdizo clip. During the first ten weeks, the live weight of animals increased gradually without any significant difference between the three lots (P>0.05). However, from the 11th week until the end of the experimentation, the weight of goats having undergone the non-bloody castration was similar to that of animals having undergone the bloody castration, but higher than that of the entire males (P<0.05). From the first to the eighth week of fattening, the average daily gains of goats having undergone the bloody and non-bloody castration were similar, but higher than those recorded on the entire male (P<0.001). From the ninth until the twelfth week of the experimentation, average daily gain of the goats that have undergone the non-bloody castration was higher than those recorded on goats with bloody castration (P<0.01) and on entire male goats (P<0.001). Thus, the non-bloody castration shows to be the best to improve growth performances of the male goat of Djallonke breed.
