  • Abstract

  • The study aims to compare the morphological parameters (topological and geometrical) entering the
root architecture of seedlings irrigated condition not in Ferlo (Northern Senegal) and irrigated
conditions in Dakar (Senegal Centre West). The plant material consists of seedling Acacia tortilis aged
240 days and Balanites aegyptiaca aged 420 and 510 days. Roots were excavated then digitized. The
3D representations obtained allow observed different architectures root seedlings. The excavation
method was used to highlight root architecture. The results show three types of roots in rain fed
condition and two areas of concentration of roots in the surface and the other in depth. In several
areas irrigated 5-7 types of roots are found and distributed from the surface to depth. A differentiation
in roles roots types as following: the existence of a double occupancy environment strategy allowing
species to explore both the superficial and deep soil horizons; the presence of anastomosing in root
systems, resulting significant impact on the water intake and nutrients. The study from 3D
representations of the root systems of seedlings in a real environment to address several issues in
agronomy, plant ecology, plant ecophysiology and forestry are often unresolved and requiring
    investigation of root systems.
