- Abstract

- There is a challenge to the Beninese agricultural research, that of transferring innovative technologies.
It is certainly the case of the introduction of Chinese hybrid maize varieties. The research problem is to
address descriptors that do motivate or not actors to adopt a variety. Then, the paper acknowledges
actors like producers, food processors, marketers, whose perception with respect to growing,
harvesting and processing stages is to pave the ways for agricultural research. Four new varieties of
maize are promoted at three research centers: T2 (Guidan 162), T3 (Jinguyuan 688), T4 (Jinyu No.8)
and T5 (Xianyu 335). Selected actors visit research experiments and compare new varieties to their own on the basis of a Comparative Appraisal Index (CAI), ie. a new variety is likely to be adopted if the
differences of score between its descriptors and those of the local variety are greater than zero. The
majority(100 %) of descriptors of the food processing stage motivate actors to adopt, while the half (50
%) of descriptors of the harvesting stage do not. The comparative advantage of new varieties is
enhanced at the growing and processing stages at decreasing rates. In term of a sensorial perception
, actors of the Guinean zone display an increasing propensity to adopt new varieties compared to the
other two zones, descriptors of agro-morphological and harvesting stages are more likely to motivate
in the North. For a future extension of new varieties of maize in Benin, an emphasis should be on
agro-morphological descriptors.
