  • Abstract

  • Staple food of the majority of the world population, cassava plays an important role in food security in several African countries. Local production, however, remains limited by major constraints including low productivity. This study aims to analyze drivers that affect the choice of cassava varieties by farmers in Togo. A socio economic survey was conducted among a sample of 100 farmers in 10 villages, and a binary Logit econometric model was estimated to identify the factors affecting the choice of four major varieties. The results show that agronomic factors such as the cycle of cassava varieties, and socio-economic factors such as the number of agricultural workers, the household size, the available farm land, the farm income and the nature of labor used influence significantly the varietal choice of cassava. Culinary and technological factors on cassava act in concert with these factors to affect the decision making of farmers’ choice. Thus, improving the productivity of cassava and the food security required to promote participatory variety selection including researchers, farmers and extension agents.
