  • Abstract

  • The study allowed to make an inventory of the ichthyofauna of Gougan reservoir, to characterize the mesh of the gillnets currently used for fishing and to determine the mesh to be used for sustainable exploitation of the most abundant fish species. The reservoir has been stocked in fish and is subjected of halieutic exploitation under a management committee. Fishing gear selectivity parameters were determined and compared to sexual maturity parameters for the species for which individuals were most abundant. A fish stock assessment tool, FiSAT, was used to determine the optimal length (Lopt) for sustainable exploitation of the species. Gillnets of 40 mm mesh (FM40) and 50 mm mesh (FM50) were the fishing gears used. The results showed that a total of nine fish species have been collected. The individuals of Sarotherodon galilaeus were the most abundant (55.27%) and theirs mean total lengths were 19.2 cm and 23.2 cm for FM40 and FM50, respectively. The size of first capture (L50C) of FM40 was 18.7 cm and of FM50, 22.3 cm. L50C of the FM40 is almost equal to the L50m (19.0 cm). From Lopt (23.1 cm), the maximum yield potential is reached. The compliance of the mesh greater than or equal to 50 mm corresponding to the Lopt is a measure of safeguard against any natural collapse in recruitment.
