  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • The role of agroforestry systems in sustaining crop and animal productions, and ensuring ecosystem services and goods in rural areas was documented in Benin from case studies in small geographic regions. It is acknowledged that the integration of trees into farms, grazing lands and landscapes is essential to promote social, cultural, economic, ecological and environmental benefits for smallholder farmers. Meanwhile, at country level such studies are still lacking in Benin. The study was based on the typology of agroforestry systems through linear transects and floristic inventories. The impacts of agroforestry on rural populations were analyzed through interviews with smallholder farmers on management practices in their agroforestry systems. Along the 177 roads axes (about 1,173 km) surveyed, we recorded 522 agroforestry practices with 55 trees species and 17 annual crop species in the 5 agroecological zones of Benin. We discriminated about 17 agroforestry systems based on annual crops and tree species. All over the country, the most frequent agroforestry trees were Parkia biglobosa, Vitellaria paradoxa and Elaeis guineensis. Other economically important trees associated with crops or animals in farms and pasture lands were Anacardium occidentale, Mangifera indica, Tectona grandis, Borassus aethiopum, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Citrus spp. and Adansonia digitata. Others useful trees were used by farmers for soil fertility restoration (e.g. Leucaena leucocephala and Gliricidia sepium) or as fodder trees (e.g. Khaya senegalensis, Afzelia africana and Pterocarpus erinaceus). These agroforestry systems are sources of goods and services for the survival of rural populations and their adaptation to climatic uncertainties.
