  • Abstract

  • Yields of corn, sorghum and rice are in steady decline and below the national average in farms in dry savannas in Togo. The study aimed to measure the potential of varieties that are more productive in agroecological zone of the dry savannas in Togo. The Accelerated Participatory Research Method (APRM) enabled the diagnosis of the causes of low cereal yields in eight selected villages based on reasoned criteria. With regard to the causes, multilocal tests of improved varieties of corn, sorghum and rice compared to the local ones were conducted in device of complete random blocks within six to thirteen villages. The results showed that climate changes and the use of inappropriate seeds by more than 90% of producers formed 20% of the causal factors of low yields in peasant cereal farming. They were responsible for 81% of the adverse effects experienced by rural residents in Togolese dry savannas. The main effects were losses of crops, reduction of more than 50% of the returns and the extension of the period of starvation to more than4 months. Average yields achieved in tons/ha of corn, sorghum and rice paddy ranged respectively from 1.34±0.01 to 2.88±0.24, 0.74±0.01 to 1.82±0.00 and 3.12±0.84-3.89±0.73. The yields of improved varieties were 25 to 192% higher than those of the control varieties. Considering the climate variability, to improve grain production in the dry savannas of Togo, the farmers are in due to take more the extra early and the early ones in the North and the moderately early and the late ones in the South varieties whose returns have been proved more stable in drought conditions should be primarily used. A better management of weed invading the cereal fields is able to ensure the superiority of improved varieties. On the other hand, the studies of the conditions of valorization of the weeds necessary to improve this superiority are needed to reinforce the elaborated continuum.
