  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • In Benin, the larval rearing of catfish clarias gariepinus depends on the artemia that is expensive and unavailable on the local market. The study aims to determine a substitute for artemia as a starter feed for C. gariepinus larva. The experimental design was a randomized block with four treatments and three replicates. The treatments corresponding to the experimental diets were following: larva fed with a diet of yeast with 69% dry matter (DM) contents (Lot 1); larva fed with a diet of spiruline with 68% DM (Lot 2); larva fed with diet of egg yolk with 71% DM (Lot 3); larva fed with Artemia (Lot 4 or control). The three formulated diets were each titrated to 58% crude protein as Artemia. The diets were distributed to the larva with an initial average weight of 2.5 mg at a diet of 100% of biomass from 3 days post hatch to 10th day of age. The results showed that the specific growth rates of larva were 38.08 ± 6,62%.J-1, 38.79 ± 3%.J-1, 39.82 ± 3.48%.J-1 and45.22 ± 4.11%.J-1 respectively for Lots 1, 2, 3 et 4. The highest cannibalism rate (CR) was obtained in Lot1 (CR = 55.2 ± 27.5%) and the lowest in Lot3 (CR = 25.86 ± 5.7%). Production costs (PC) are higher in Lot2 (PC = 113.06 F cfa.g-1) and lower in Lot3 (PC = 2.14 F cfa.g-1). The diet formulated with egg yolk is more effective of the four experimental diets as a starter feed for C. gariepinus larva.
