  • The current ram-fattening scheme in Benin requires to feed-intensive using agro-industrials by-products, such as cottonseed cake. The high cost and the inaccessibility of this feed constitutes a contraint of the wide adoption of this fattening technique. The use of some locally available feed resources such as Okara, whose the availability, the accessibility and the cost are not factors limited are potential alternatives to cottonseed cake. The study aimed to develop feeding strategies that incorporate Okara to partially or totally substitute for cottonseed cake and identifying technically and economically efficient rations for extension. Thus 32 Djallonke sheep averaging initial live weight (LW) of 13.6 ± 0.41 kg and 224 ± 6.5 days old of age. They were divided individually into four feeding groups of eight heads in one another and all received the hay of Panicum maximum as basal ration. Animals from group 1 were supplemented with cotton seed cake (R1) and the ones from group 2 received 50% of cotton seed cake and 50% of Okara (R2) the supplementation of the sheep’s group 3 was composed of 25% of cotton seed cake and 75% of Okara (R3). Animals from group 4 were supplemented with Okara (R4). After an adaptation period of 15 days, the sheep were fattened during 60 days. A test of in vivo digestibility relations has been then conducted after the test of fattening with (16) sheep on account of four (04) per group. Results showed significant (p ˂ 0.05) difference between growth performances of the 4 groups of sheep. Daily average weight gains were 87.50 g, 82.91 g, 79.39 g and 63.75 g for groups R1, R2, R3 and R4 respectively and Feed Conversion Ratios (FCR) of Dry Matter (DM) were 9.52 kg DM/kg LW, 10.92 kg DM/kg LW, 12.18 kg DM/kg LW and 14.06 kg DM/kg LW respectively. The ratio DCP/MFU (Digestibility of Crude Protein/Milk Forage Unit) of group R4 was respectively higher (p < 0.0442) to 9%, 70% and 17 % in groups R1, R2 and R3. Using fodder of Okara to 50% (R2), 75% (R3) and 100% (R4) produced a net profit respectively superior to 1,402 FCFA,; 1,797 FCFA and 1,202 FCFA in cottonseed cake (R1). Thus Okara can be used to partially or totally replace cottonseed cake. However, the level of substitution Okara will require particular attention.
