  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • Parachanna obscura is a fish much appreciated by the local populations because of its high nutritional value and its economic potential. These fish are highly exploited in the lower valley of the Ouémé River in Bénin. The objective of the study was to assess the parameters of the population dynamics of the species. Data were collected in June, July and August 2017 in the Agonlin-Lowe, Gogbo and Gangban fisheries. Fishing gear has been characterized. The lengths and weights of the fish were measured. Growth streaks on fish scales have been read. The weight allometry coefficient (PT) -length (LT) of the fish was determined. Population dynamics parameters were determined using FiSAT software. The results revealed that individuals with LT < 30 cm had a negative allometry (b = 2.57) against those with LT > 30 cm which presented a positive allometry (b = 3.35). The individuals of the species lived in a poor ecological condition because the condition factor k was greater than 3. Their average life expectancy was around 8 years 4 months. Individuals with one year old presented LT < 12 cm, those of 2 years old had 12 cm < LT < 21 cm, those of 3 years old had 21 cm < LT <25 cm and those of 4 years old had 25 cm < LT < 31 cm and were most numerous in the middle. The length L∞, the growth rate K and the growth performance Ф 'were 40.06 cm, 0.36/year and 2.76 respectively. The size of the first catch (L50) was 10.03 cm. Fishing-related mortality (0.61/year) was lower than natural mortality (0.83/year) and the exploitation rate E was 0.42 < 0.50 (optimal). Small fish dominated the catches (L50/L∞ < 0.5). Efficient management of the P. obscura stock in the lower valley of the Ouémé River involves raising awareness and training fishermen and the local population to ensure the conservation of halieutic biodiversity. Fishermen should use relatively larger mesh nets and increase the fishing effort (Emax = 0.81).
