  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • In Benin, significant efforts have been made in recent years by the agricultural policy to revive cotton growing, which in the past has declined to the detriment of cereal crops, including the main one is maize, which is considered more profitable. Current official statistics suggest significant increases in production which place Benin at the top of the list West African seed cotton for the 2018-2019 campaign. While this performance reflects the scope of measures to revive cotton cultivation and the renewed interest of producers for cotton, the competitiveness of the crop is rarely mentioned. With emphasis on economic profitability, the study offers a comparative analysis of the competitiveness of cotton and corn production in Benin. To do this, primary data relating to the socio-economic characteristics of producers and the inputs and outputs of cotton and corn productions for the 2017 - 2018 crop year were collected sing an individual questionnaire on a reasoned and random sample of 141 producers from the commune of Bembèrèkè in North-Eastern Benin. Analysis of data using descriptive statistics and Student's t-tests for samples paired indicates that from the point of view of margins (gross and net), internal rate of return (IRR), average labor productivity (PML) and the Benefit-Cost ratio (B/C) the Cotton and corn production are profitable for producers in the study area. However, maize production has been found to be more profitable than cotton production regardless of the indicator considered. These results suggest that to ensure a sustainable recovery of the cotton growing, specific actions to improve economic competitiveness must be considered. This can be, for example, the introduction of cottonseeds at high yield and increased input subsidies and/or the price of cotton seeds.
