  • Abstract

  • Cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walpers has multiple roles in human and livestock feeding through its protein-rich seeds and high forage haulms. However, its production is limited by insect pests which lower the yields. The study was conducted to test in the laboratory the efficacy of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana, isolate 115 (Balsamo) Vuillemin in the management of the bug Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stål (Hemiptera: Coreidae), a major pest of cowpea. Concentrations of 0; 2.5 x 108; 5 x 108 and 109 conidia per ml of B. bassiana 115 were applied on the third and fourth larval instar stages by the topical and spray methods. The effect of these concentrations on the larval mortality of C. tomentosicollis was assessed daily for two weeks. The doses of 5 x 108 and 109 conidia / ml gave significant mortalities of 82.5 to 100% with the two larval stages from the 11th to the 13th day. A reduction in the longevity of C. tomentosicollis larval stages was also observed from 7.6 to 9.10 days. Cox regressions with different doses gave relatively high values of coefficient B showing a significant effect response/dose.
