  • Abstract
  • The main objective of this study is to explore Greek cotton producers%u2019 willingness to continue growing cotton after the implementation of the NCR (New Cotton Reform). The willingness to continue growing cotton is examined given different cotton price levels, a factor that is now less depending on European policy. The identification of the factors that affect producers%u2019 willingness to continue growing cotton, can help policy makers in adjusting the cotton policy in the regions examined. In order to identify producers%u2019 characteristics that affect their decisions, a bivariate probit model is utilized. According to the results of the study, and unless the appropriate policy measures apply, the majority of producers do not intend to continue growing cotton under any of the examined scenarios. Furthermore, the results of the probit models indicate that socio-demographic characteristics play an important role in determining producers%u2019 decisions. Production cost is also a crucial factor that policy makers should take into account, since it was found to significantly affect producers%u2019 willingness to continue growing cotton.
