  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • This study was carried out to describe and to assess various behaviour parameters of common francolin raised in closed captivity in order to domesticate the species. Six groups of 14 francolin individual (7 males and 7 females) were set up for ethological parameters measurement: Group 1= only male, Group 2 = only female, Group 3 = 1 male and 1 female; Group 4 = 1 male and 2 females, Group 5 = 2 males and 1 female; Group 6 = 2 males and 2 females. Results showed that the main activities of the francolin during the days were feeding, walking and grooming with intermediate phase of rest. The feeding party can be either active i.e. own feed excavation or passive i.e. provided feed pecking. The rest party is divided in deep rest during the night and wakeful rest during the day. The walk can be rectilinear and/or circular. Watering, shouting, alerting and singing represented the others activities of the francolin during the day even weakly represented. Grooming is composed of scraping, stretching and the smoothing of the feathers. Raised together, we found that the common francolins developed social organization characterized by safety insurance, reciprocal assistance and social character. The day of the common francolin is subdivided in two periods. The first period is nocturne and corresponds to the time period going from 7:00 pm to 6:30 am and is reserved only for sleeping. The second period is diurnal and corresponds to the time period going from of 6:30 am to 7:00 pm. The common francolin is monogamist like guinea fowl and the sex ratio for the reproduction is one male for one female. However the social group of francolin is composed of at least two couples.
