- Abstract

- In Benin, the agricultural sector feeds the population and occupies most of the assets. But the
production and marketing of agricultural products face constraints related to access to production
factors, markets, credit and information. Faced with this situation, producers in general and particularly
rice farmers resort to contractual arrangements. The objective of this research was to analyse the
financial profitability of rice production based on contractual arrangements in the district of Glazoué.
Specifically, it was about comparing the financial profitability of the rice growers practicing the various
listed contractual arrangements in order to identify the best ones likely to bring an added-value to
producers. The data were collected from a random sample of 100 rice producers. They were analysed
using the marginal costs method based on operating accounts. The results revealed three types of
contractual arrangements that producers were engaged in: input contractors, credit contractors and diversified contractors. The contractual arrangement on credit was more practiced. In addition, rice
production was financially profitable overall. According to the types of contractors, the total production
costs per hectare were on average higher for diversified contractors than for the other types of
contractors with a significant difference (p < 0.05). The same trend was observed in the quantity of rice
sold. In terms of gross margin by type of contractor, rice farmers with diversified contractual
arrangements had a higher net margin than the others, but the difference was not statistically
significant (p > 0.05). To improve the income and well-being of small producers, it is essential to
promote the contractual arrangements among the various actors in the rice sector in Benin.
