  • Abstract

  • This work aims to inventory and characterize the diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates along Upper Ouémé. The macroinvertebrates were investigated during the dry season according to the standardized global biological index (IBGN) sampling protocol on the upper Ouémé River. Thus, a Surber with a unit area of 1/20 m2 and a mesh size of 100 μm was used at five stations for macroinvertebrate harvesting. At each station, twelve samples are taken: eight on the dominant habitats and four on the marginal habitats. Before sampling, six (06) physicochemical parameters (temperature, pH, conductivity, transparency, depth and TDS) were measured at each station. The study made it possible to inventory 4,375 macroinvertebrates belonging to 28 families and 15 orders. This macrofauna consists of 80.91% insects, 12.69% worms and 6.03% molluscs. The order of Diptera and Oligochaeta are the most important and account respectively for 77.51% and 10.83% of the total macroinvertebrate wealth. The families of chironomidae (932 individuals / m2), ceratopogonidae (174 individuals / m2) and lumbriculida (158 individuals / m2) are the most common and the most abundant. The preponderance of these three families of pollutant-resistant macroinvertebrates attests a poor quality of the water of the upper Ouémé. Diversity indices indicate that the macroinvertebrate community of Upper Ouémé is very unbalanced and undiversified. The canonical correspondence analysis yielded three main assemblages of macroinvertebrates influenced by the Transparency, Depth, Temperature, Conductivity and TDS of the water of the upper Ouémé River. The pollutant tolerants Lumbriculida, Hydrobiidae, Ceratopogonidae and Chironomidae were determined by low transparency, low pH and high temperature.
