  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • In organic and conventional production systems, cotton producers combine food crops to diversify their crops and maintain the level of soil fertility. Unlike organic cotton, these crops rotate in the organic system have exempted organic premiums during their marketing; like corn. The study aimed to make a comparative analysis of the economic performance of maize production in the two production systems. It was conducted in the north and center of Benin and more specifically in the communes of Tanguiéta, Banikoara and Glazoué. A total of 186 heads of maize producing households in the two systems were sampled and surveyed in a reasoned and random manner in seven villages in these communes. The SPSS 21 software made it possible to calculate some indicators of economic profitability which were then compared between the production systems by means of Student's t tests with two independent samples. Thus, the results obtained showed that the yield of maize was 1.169 kg/ha for organic versus 1.246 kg/ha for conventional. The organic system had a higher net margin (101,625 FCFA/ha compared to 87,161 FCFA/ha). The production costs amounted to 68,044 FCFA/ha for the conventional system against 43,911 FCFA/ha for the organic system. On the other hand, the capital productivity was 5.89 FCFA/ha for the corn produced under organic system against 4.47FCFA/ha for the conventional one with a significant difference (p < 0.001). Promoters of organic farming should therefore think about promoting organic food crops, by granting organic bonuses and by making organic inputs available to organic producers as incentives for production.
