  • Abstract

  • English abstract
  • Tomato production in the off-season in southern Bénin is influenced by climatic factors and by the pressure from pests. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of shelter, on climatic, developmental and growth parameters and the incidence of virus infection on tomato plants and tomato productivity. In order to offer a tomato cultivation system adapted to the conditions of small and medium producers, the effect of shelters [Hangar at different shading levels (25 to 100%) and greenhouse] on the climate, growth, development of plants, incidence of virus infection and yield, was compared to a control. The results showed that with temperature, no significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed between the variations recorded under the shaded shelters (32 to 34 °C) and the control (33 to 35 °C). The temperature recorded in the greenhouse was higher than that of the ambient environment. The relative humidity varied between 50 and 70% for the shaded shelter at 75%, between 70 and 90% for the shaded shelters at 25 and 50% and under the control from 95 to 100%. Regardless of the shelter (shade level or greenhouse), the incidence of viral transmission from Bemisia tabacia was late compared to the control. The effect of 100% shade was negative on the development (height and branching) and growth (flowering and fruiting) of plants while that of shading at 25, 50 and 75% was positive on these same parameters. In the greenhouse, a low rate of fruit setting was recorded. Yields are practically zero under 100% shade. The 25% shade with 1.63 t / ha increased the yield of the tomato by a third compared to the control. The greenhouse produced 1.05 t / ha of tomato with the PADMA variety. These results indicate that tomato production in the off-season in southern Benin can only be possible under shelter if the system allows total regulation of climatic parameters, notably temperature variation.
