- Abstract
- English abstract
- In the cotton-growing areas of West and Central Africa, the support given to farms in the framework of national actions or bilateral/multilateral cooperation is not based on a typology of farms to help identify what to do and measure what has been achieved. Such a situation results from the lack of a typology or the lack of regular application of a typology whether perfectly defined or not. This article draws on the case of Côte d'Ivoire to show that it is possible to define a typology for action based on a simple criterion.
Through the analysis of a survey carried out in 2014 on a sample of a thousand farms, a typology was established on the sole criterion of livestock ownership, consistently with the tradition of hoarding in the areas concerned. This typology clearly differentiates four types of farms according to their technical and financial performance in cotton growing, the characteristics of the farmers and those of their families, and their well-being through the possession of certain durable goods.
The proposed typology is adapted, simple to apply, flexible for its evolution and useful in defining policies in cotton areas of Cote d’Ivoire. The common tradition of livestock hoarding makes it relevant to recommend its adaptation in the other cotton-producing countries of West and Central Africa. The adoption of similar typologies in various countries of a region should provide additional valuable information to help define and appraise actions to be conducted.
