  • Abstract

  • Climat change impacts on agricultural environment and adaption actionsin cotton agro-pastoral zone in the district of Banikoara (Bénin)The overall goal of the research reported inthis thesis is to provide information on the extent of climate change effects on the agricultural production system and on the social environment in the agro-pastoral zone of cotton production in Benin. For this purpose, the adopted methodology consistedof the collection of climatic data, soils data, agricultural statistic data, interviews (structured and semi-structured) data as well as their analysis by means of various software. It appeared that the investigation area that is the District of Banikoaraexperienced the climate changeeffects. This was detected by the rise in the maximum and minimal temperatures. Climatic change affected not only the annual rainfall, but also the number of rainy days as well as the rainfall distribution over the period 1970-2014. Biophysical systems of the District of Banikoara showedrainfall variability with wet years (1994, 1996; 1998;1999;2003 and 2012) anddry years (1973; 1980; 1981; 1983;2000 and 2006) which were respectively marked by surpluses and reductions inrainfall. At the seasonal scale, climate change resulted in a delay in raininstallation and in season shortening, and affected the soils fertility, the exchangeablebases, and the exchange capacity of cations. Results of soils analysis revealed importantdecrease of organic matter content and the chemical elements in all soils of Banikoara District. The analysis of the relationship between agricultural yield of maincrops and agro-climatic indexes revealed important fluctuation and the depression trend ofthe crops yields in the investigation area. From the analysis of local perception of the climate change, it arose that not only the farmers perceived the process through the variability of rainfall, the seasons-lag, the delay of the raininstallation, theirregular distribution of rainfall, the rise in temperatures, an increase in the frequency of winds one but also its effects on their livelihood. Investigation revealed that the climate change generated also social change in the District of Banikoara, andincreasedthe frequency of conflicts between farmers and breeders. To ensure the sustainability of their activities, farmers of Banikoara developed adaptation strategies that include early sowings, the re-sowings, the adoption of new crop varieties, and the diversification of the crops and the use of manure. Simulations of the future agricultural yields showed that by 2050, the rate of reduction in agricultural yields will have variable magnitudesdepending oncrops: cassava (-26.7%), the corn (-15.6%) and cotton (13.7%) will be most affected. Rainfall could decrease significantly in the sensible agricultural phases (April-October). The comparative analysis between the determined seedling periods and the adviced seedling periods by agricultural councelling service showed an important timing delay. Only corn crops, rice and cotton have optimal sowing periods corresponding to that indicated by the SCDABanikoara. Keywords: Climate change, Biophysical systems, Social change, Simulation of agricultural yields, Agro-pastoral zone cotton, Benin.
