- The fisheries sector in West Africa has long been considered marginal and insignificant as to its participation in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Thus, during the implementation of national programs for poverty reduction, policy makers prefer to focus their attention on agriculture rather than fishing as a source of sustainable livelihoods for local people.
